CHARLOTTE — Charlotte’s city council voted Monday night to approve millions of dollars for new stun guns and body cameras for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The city said more than 1,700 stun guns need to be replaced. The new ones will have a lifespan of five years, and better video and audio quality as well.
The total cost for the upgrades is around $4 million.
City council will also get an update on city ordinances. Channel 9 first reported in December that CMPD had asked all officers to stop criminally enforcing city ordinances due to a change in state law.
Also on Monday, the Charlotte City Council sign off on $19 million in COVID-19 relief aid. The funding includes $5 million for small businesses, $4 million to the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority for tourism, and $1.5 million to build a local food production and distribution facility in west Charlotte.
