CHARLOTTE — It was a heartwarming surprise for four children, once separated in the foster care system, when they found out a week ago that a Charlotte mother adopted them.
Now they’re living under one roof as a big family.
“They are funny. So, so smart. One is athletic, one is artsy. Very easy to get along with,” Susan Pires said.
About two-and-a-half years ago, Pires’ life changed forever when four kids in the foster care system entered her world. There was one who immediately expressed her desire to be adopted.

“She said, ‘If things don’t work out with me going back to my family, would you adopt us?’ I said I would in a minute,” Pires said.
And that’s exactly what Pires set out to do -- help bring four siblings together under one roof -- a family that was separated in the system.
“It was honestly terrifying. Those two were in this home. I was in another home. He was in another home,” one of the children, Zara Pires said.
Susan Pires said the adoption was official in May but last Friday, they held a party to surprise the kids.
“You’re not a foster kid anymore. Peace out foster kid. You’re a Pires. This says you’ve been adopted. Alana, this is yours,” Pires said at the party.

“None of us saw it coming. There are literally no words to describe how I felt,” Zara Pires said.
Zara now has six siblings because her mother has three biological children. They’re older now and can support mom, who is now raising three children on her own, and working full-time at a restaurant.
Pires said she wanted to share this story in hopes it brings a smile to your face and shows others the difference you can make in a child’s life.
“There’s such a need. There are so many kids out there that need a home. If I had a bigger house, I’d have more kids. I totally would,” Pires said.
