3 adults with dementia found wandering in SC after being separated while traveling

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Law enforcement from two different counties safely found three adults with dementia after they got separated from each other traveling to West Virginia.

York police said they responded to an alarm at York Intermediate School just after 8:30 a.m. When they got to the school, they found 79-year-old Louis Nester, of St. Augustine, Fla.

Nester was confused and police said he believed he was still in St. Augustine.

Nester told officers he was looking for his sister 85-year-old Logene Addair, who is also from St. Augustine. York County K9 officers attempted to find a track, but they were unable to find her.

Officials said they called Nester's family, who said he, his sister and his brother-in-law all left Florida Friday to head to West Virginia.

All three adults have some form of dementia, according to the family.

The family in Florida told officers the Richland County Sheriff's Office found Nester's brother-in-law walking along the Interstate 77 and Interstate 26 interchange around 3 a.m.

York police said they compared information with the Richland County Sheriff's Office, but ultimately decided to put Addair in the NCIC since they did not know if she was missing from Richland County or York.

Authorities said they got a call around 1 p.m. that a woman was walking around Jefferson Elementary School, but when the caller turned around they could no longer see the woman.

When officers got to the school, they found a woman lying by a fence and confirmed it was Addair.

Officials said family from Florida was already heading to South Carolina when they were notified that all three found safely.

Nester, Addair and Nester's brother-in-law were all taken to the hospital as a precaution.
