2023 NFL Draft: Hickory Ridge HS standout drafted into the NFL

CHARLOTTE — Hickory Ridge High School has never had one of its football players drafted into the NFL. That changed this year.

The Arizona Cardinals selected former Hickory Ridge High School standout Garrett Williams in the third round of the NFL Draft Friday night with the 72nd overall pick.

The program had two NFL draft prospects

Williams, a former Syracuse cornerback, and South Carolina wide receiver Jalen Brooks were both NFL Draft prospects this year.

Williams became the first player in Hickory Ridge High’s program to get into the NFL.

The duo, who spent time playing together while at the school, brought a burst of energy to the program, leaders said.

“Don’t get me wrong – the 10 years before they got here, the athletics were still phenomenal, there was just this incredible burst of energy,” said former athletic director Phil Furr.

Hickory Ridge Principal Shaun Poole added he’s been fielding calls from NFL teams, inquiring about his former students.

“When they ask that character question, I share the same stories that I’m sharing with you,” Poole said. “Jalen was the first one into my office offering his jersey to me asking me what can he do to better the school. The same thing with Garrett. Garrett has always been there every step of the way to be that leader.”
