MONROE, N.C. — A third suspect was arrested Sunday for the deadly shooting of a Monroe man that happened last month.
Elija Demon Bennett, 20, of Monroe, was taken into custody and faces charges that include first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery.
Monroe police have already arrested and charged Jakaiy Hammonds with the Jan. 27 murder of Alvin Brewer. They also arrested a teen, whose name has not been released because of their age.
Police said the teen was in a fight with the 42-year-old victim on Commerce Drive when Hammonds stepped in and fired shots.
Brewer was shot and died at a hospital.
No other details have been released at this point.
