2 North Carolina state troopers suspended during investigation

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

Two North Carolina state troopers have been suspended from the job and nearly 200 cases they’re tied to have been dismissed.

WRAL in Raleigh reports the North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating how Sgt. Garrett Macario and his supervisor, Sgt. Matthew Morrison, handled a chase and deadly crash last October.

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said evidence from that case and body camera video from the scene raised questions about the troopers’ involvement in the wreck.

According to WRAL, Freeman said she received a call in December from the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation about the Oct. 7 crash in which a young man was killed on Raleigh’s Capital Boulevard.

WRAL reports that due to the investigation surrounding the officers’ “credibility and truthfulness,” Freeman dismissed 180 DWI cases where Macario was the arresting officer.

We’re working to learn more details about how many of the sergeant’s cases could be dismissed going forward.

WRAL reports that records show Macario, 26, has been with NCSHP since February 2019. Morrison, 40, was hired in July 2012.
