CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police believe speed played a role in a crash that killed a man and a woman overnight in northeast Charlotte.

The single-car wreck happened around 1:40 a.m. on Hubbard Road, between Mallard Creek Road and West Sugar Creek Road.
Police told Channel 9 that the two people in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was identified as Larry Lockhart Jr., 40, and his passenger was Tabitha Staton, 42.
Investigators told Channel 9 that the silver Dodge Challenger the pair were in was speeding down Hubbard Road when Lockhart lost control of the car, drove off the right side of the road, crashed through a fence before heading down an embankment and hitting a tree.
Channel 9 was the first station to arrive at the scene and could see the badly damaged Challenger that had crashed through a white fence. Crews were pulling that vehicle out of an embankment.
Officers have not said if alcohol was a factor in the wreck, which remains under investigation.
