CHARLOTTE — Police said speed played a role in a fiery crash that left two Myers Park High School graduates dead and two other people hurt in southeast Charlotte early Sunday.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the wreck happened around 2:30 a.m. on Colville Road, between Randolph Road and Queens Road.
When police got there, they said they found a burning a 2019 Mercedes E450 station wagon and four people who had been involved in the crash.
Investigators said 20-year-old Robert McElveen Walker was speeding down Colville Road near Twilford Place when he lost control and struck a curb. The Mercedes then ran off the road and hit a set of brick steps and a tree before catching on fire.
According to police, Walker was pronounced dead on scene by MEDIC while still in the vehicle. The left rear passenger, 20-year-old Henry Huntley Melvin, had been pulled out of the burning car by the other two passengers, but he too was pronounced dead on scene.
The right front and right rear passengers were taken to Atrium Health Main with injuries, but are expected to be OK.
Walker and Melvin graduated from Myers Park High School in 2020. School staff will be available for support.

According to CMPD, excessive speed appears to be a factor in the crash. Impairment is also suspected, and test results are pending.
There were no known witnesses to the crash.
