CHARLOTTE — Speed and impairment are believed to be factors in a crash that left two people dead and two others in south Charlotte, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.

The crash happened on Providence Road West near the Lancaster Highway intersection just before 12:30 p.m. Friday. CMPD said three cars were involved: A 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, a 2012 Ford Econoline van with heavy front-end damage, and a 2009 Hyundai Genesis with front-end damage.

CMPD said the Jeep’s driver, Mitchell Virgulti, 32, and the Ford’s driver, Angel Enrique Lopez-Alvarado, 41, died in the crash.

The driver and the front passenger of the Hyundai were both taken with minor injuries to Atrium Health Providence.

Police said they believe Virgulti was heading west on Providence Road West when he crossed the center line, hitting the van head-on. The Hyundai then hit the back of the van.

Investigators said Lopez-Alvarado was wearing a seatbelt but Virgulti was not.

Authorities said they believe for Virgulti, speed and impairment were factors in the crash. At this time, police said they don’t know if speed or impairment were factors for Lopez-Alvarado, but they said neither appear to be factors for the driver of the Hyundai.

Toxicology results are still pending for Virgulti and Lopez-Alvarado.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about it is asked to contact Detective Buckley at 704-432-2169, extension 6. Information can also be left anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600, or by clicking here.

A Gofundme donation page has been set up to help the family of Lopez-Alvarado.
