FORT MILL, S.C. — Two people were found shot to death Monday afternoon at the H&R Block on Main Street in Fort Mill, officials said.

Officers were called to the scene just before 1:15 p.m.

“There is absolutely no imminent threat to the public,” police said in a news release following the shooting.

Deborah Elaine Buchanan, 68, of Charlotte was shot and James Alexander Vinton, 39, of Rock Hill, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to officials. Buchanan was Vinton’s mother-in-law.

The county coroner told Channel 9 the situation was a murder-suicide. A source close to the victim said the shooting stemmed from a family situation involving the business.

There were several customers inside but nobody else was hurt.

Maj. Bryan Zachary said police were speaking with nearby businesses as part of the investigation.

“Those businesses, of course, they’re in very close proximity to one another,” Zachary said. “They’re bordered by businesses on three sides, actually. So, with that being the case, we might have any number of people who might have heard something.”

The investigation is ongoing.
