2 dead after hitting tree on Highway 321 in Gaston County

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Two people died in a car wreck on Highway 321 in Gaston County Thursday morning, troopers said.

Officials said the driver and passenger of a Honda Civic crashed near mile marker 18, just north of the Hardin Road exit, around 7:30 a.m.

Troopers are still investigating what happened, but they believe the car hydroplaned, went off the roadway and hit a tree.

In addition to the weather, speed may have also been a factor, a witness told troopers.

The identities of the victims won’t be released until family members have been notified.
