HORRY COUNTY, N.C. — Two children and one adult are in critical condition after a vehicle went through a concrete barrier, off a bridge and into a South Carolina river.
Horry County Fire Rescue Capt. Mark Nugent says crews responded Monday afternoon to the crash on Highway 501 near Conway after a vehicle fell into the Waccamaw River.
Crews were called to U.S. 501 on the bridge and then had to go down a ravine to rescue two children and one adult, according to ABC affiliate WPDE.
Nugent says a 10-year-old child was flown to a local hospital, while the adult and a 13-year-old child were taken by ambulance. All three were taken in critical condition.
Nugent says he isn't sure what caused the crash. He estimates it was a 30 to 40 foot (9 to 12 meter) drop from the bridge to the water. The car landed on its top in a marshy area.
Further details haven't been released.
