Wilhoit was unresponsive inside the 4Runner when officers arrived. He was taken to Atrium Health-CMC Main with serious injuries.

There was no one else in the SUV when the single-vehicle wreck happened.

Speed appears to be a factor, police said. Officials are waiting for a toxicology report to determine if Wilhoit was impaired.
