16-year-old charged with attempted murder after police chase across two counties

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A 16-year-old has been charged with attempted murder after a police chase that spanned two counties.

It came to an end after troopers forced him off of the road in Mount Holly.

Channel 9 reporter Ken Lemon delved into how it all began.

The teen appeared in court on Monday, where prosecutors said he swerved during the pursuit, almost hitting three officers who were trying to stop him.

They said one of them could have been killed.

It began on Interstate 85 on Thursday when a trooper said he spotted the 16-year-old going 96 miles an hour in a 60-mile-an-hour zone.

Instead of stopping, the teen drove into west Charlotte and onto some back roads.

According to arrest warrants, the teen pushed the rented SUV up to 100 miles per hour in a 35-mile-an-hour zone.

Troopers then tried to stop him twice, but he turned right towards their cruisers, nearly hitting them.

He then drove back into Mount Holly on Highway 27. When a Mount Holly officer tried to use stop sticks to deflate his tires, troopers said the driver turned and drove toward that officer.

Eventually, officers used a pit maneuver to force him off the road just north of Mount Holly.

The teen is now facing several charges, including attempted murder. His bond has been set for $1 million.
