14-year-old shot in Statesville, police say

STATESVILLE, N.C. — A 14-year-old is recovering after being shot in the head early Thursday morning, according to the Statesville Police Department.

The incident occurred just before 12:30 a.m. police were dispatched to Forest Hollow Drive after receiving reports about a victim with a gunshot wound to the head.

At the home, police found a 14-year-old who had sustained a grazing wound to the head. The victim received medical assistance and was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for further treatment.

Neighbors told Channel 9′s Dave Faherty that the teen will be undergoing surgery on Thursday afternoon.

The owner of the home, Ke’esha Ellison, said she was getting ready to go to bed when she heard six shots coming from outside and dropped to the floor.

She said her son and some of his friends were outside of the home when the 14-year-old was hit by gunfire.

Other neighbors told Faherty that this is the third time someone has fired shots at homes in the area, causing those who live there to consider moving.

“I think it’s awful. It needs to stop. It needs to stop. That’s an innocent kid—a good kid. He’s a football player for Statesville High School,” Ellison said.

Police said the investigation into this case is active and ongoing. No suspects have been named at this time.

“The justice system is broken,” said Kenneth Daye, whose son, Shannon Lackey, was killed. “If you feel like you can’t be charged, wouldn’t you do the same thing?”

A witness to the shooting said the gunman was in a newer model, all-black Nissan sedan.
