CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 14-year-old boy was charged Monday after a 10-year-old boy was accidentally shot Sunday in north Charlotte.
The 14-year-old is charged with possession of a firearm by a minor after police said they determined the teenager had the gun and accidentally shot Antonio White Jr.
"I’ve seen Junior when he came out of the house,” neighbor Antonio Wallace said. “They took him out on a gurney. He was smiling. He was in good spirits. He was smiling."
White's father said the two are good friends.
White is recovering. Officials told Channel 9 the boy went through surgery and is expected to survive after he suffered serious injuries.
“(I) wish him a speedy recovery,” Wallace said. “He's a strong little kid. He’s really happy-go-lucky and everything like that. I just wish him a speedy recovery.”
Police said they responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call just before 3:30 p.m. on Cairns Mill Court.
When officers arrived, they said they found the boy with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Investigators said there were multiple juveniles in the home when the boy was shot. They said they're trying to determine how the juveniles accessed the weapon.
“I saw the firefighters, the police and the ambulance, so I was just kind of frantic. But right now he's OK,” the boy’s sister told Channel 9.
