The crash shut down the southbound lanes for about two hours and drivers were forced to get by on the shoulder before troopers could open up the right lane.
MEDIC said eight people were taken to CMC Main while two others were taken to Novant. Nobody had serious injuries.
After taking statements from those involved, Highway Patrol Troopers said a van with 7 passengers ran into a vehicle on I-77. That vehicle then spun and was hit by a second vehicle.
None of the drivers know exactly how they ended up in the wreck because it happened so quickly.
