Woman arrested after shooting husband at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius, police say

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Cornelius police arrested a woman connected after she shot her husband at Ramsey Creek Park, police said.

There was a report that someone was shot near the bathroom facility and when officers got to the park, they found a man who had been shot in the chest.

Investigators said Tuesday that Terri Lynn Bignell, 66, of Concord, shot her husband during a dispute, Cornelius police said.

Bignell ran into the woods and was found early Tuesday on Largo Place, police said.

Bignell was taken to the Mecklenburg County jail Tuesday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, authorities said.

The shooting was an isolated incident, the Cornelius Police Department said.

The victim has life-threatening injuries and was taken to Atrium Health Main.

From Chopper 9 Skyzoom around 4:30 p.m. Monday, officers could be seen swarming the area.

Nick Donnison told Channel 9′s Anthony Kustura that violent crime is surprising for this area.

“I was blown away,” he said. “Would never even expect that at all.”

Neighbors told Kustura that Bignell lives in the gated Christenbury Hall neighborhood in Concord, about 20 minutes from the park. They also said a shooting is completely out of character -- Bignell doesn’t have a criminal history, Channel 9 learned.

Since Ramsey Creek Park is so popular with families, especially in recent warm weather, Donnison is just thankful more people didn’t get hurt.

“Kids are playing with their parents on the playground,” he said.

No further information has been released.
