Matthews shooting, crash (WSOC)

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Police have charged another teen after a man was shot and killed last month causing him to collide with another car before crashing into a building in Matthews.

Officers were called just before 6 p.m. on March 18 to the intersection of Matthews Township Parkway and Sam Newell Road for reports of shots being fired.

When they got there, police found a vehicle that had crashed into a building in the Matthews Township Office Park and the driver was shot.

According to investigators, after the driver -- Brett T. Butler -- was shot, his vehicle drove through the intersection and collided with another vehicle before hitting the building.

Butler died at the hospital a day later.

The driver of the other vehicle was sent to a hospital, and their condition has not been released.

Chopper 9 flew over the scene and spotted what appeared to be the two vehicles involved in the incident. A wrecked car was in the intersection while a pickup truck was crashed into a nearby building.

A portion of the road was roped off as police investigated.

On April 1, Matthews police said a 17-year-old suspect was arrested in Stallings and charged with murder.

Due to his age, his name will not be released.

On Friday, officers arrested 18-year-old Ricardo Hernandez Sandoval and charged him with accessory after the fact of a felony.
