HICKORY, N.C. — Surveillance video shows a car crash that may have led to a shooting near a Hickory daycare Monday night. A driver was shot after witnesses said he ran from his car.
The victim was flown to the hospital for treatment. He was in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Channel 9′s Dave Faherty spoke with parents at the daycare who were picking up their kids when this happened. One mother described hearing three shots at the intersection leading to the daycare. She said the two cars involved were in a parking lot near the daycare at La Vie Christian Academy down the road where an argument started and both drivers sped off.
A viewer recorded a video of the cars leaving from the parking area between the daycare and the Hickory Memory Care Center. Investigators said they don’t believe anyone at either business was involved.
Surveillance video shows a reddish SUV approaching the intersection before another car accelerates, slamming into the back of the SUV. Witnesses said the driver of the car got out and tried to run away but was shot.
Afterward, a large police response lined Third Avenue Southeast in the Kenworth neighborhood.
So far, no arrests have been made in the case. The person driving the SUV left the scene after the shooting, investigators said. They are now working to find that SUV and question the driver.
Investigators told Faherty at this point, they believe the two men possibly knew each other and are trying to determine a motive.
Dawn Triplett lives just down the street.
“If there was something going on, they should have talked or resolved it. They shouldn’t have to resort to shooting,” she said. “This is crazy.”
A man who lives nearby said the shooting and another one earlier this summer have his family considering a move.
“It’s just not safe for us anymore to be here. We’re definitely concerned,” he said. “Especially because the shots that happened, you know, that shot could have gone anywhere and hit us or something.”
