CHARLOTTE — Police have classified a shooting that left a 48-year-old man dead in east Charlotte at the beginning of December as a “justified homicide.”

The shooting happened at about 5:10 p.m. along Lawyers Road at East W.T. Harris Boulevard.

Officers said the shooting stemmed from an argument that turned violent.

“We believe that the victim and subject are both known to each other,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Major Brian Foley said. “This whole incident developed as the result of an argument.”

Detreye Kenjuan Walker died at the scene, and Foley said alcohol was involved.

“Again, we talk about alcohol use during the holidays,” he said. “I want to reiterate this to the public -- alcohol use amplifies a lot of things, including emotions. That’s why it’s so critically important that you limit your alcohol.”

Foley said he wanted to remind everyone about how alcohol affects judgment.

“We talk about intoxicated driving,” he said. “It’s not just intoxicated driving that can hurt people, it’s personal relationships and when those emotions get out of control, violence can occur.”

The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and have decided to not to charge anyone.

No further information has been released.
