MONROE, N.C. — A 17-year-old was shot and killed Sunday afternoon in Monroe's first homicide of 2017, according to police.

Officers were dispatched around 3 p.m. to Everette and Hough streets where they said they found the shooting victim, Kalique Farmer. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said Farmer did not live in the neighborhood and was headed to a cookout when he was killed.

Police do not have anyone in custody. Investigators could not say if there was more than one suspect, but they do believe multiple guns were used in the shooting.

“Our officers and investigators are working tirelessly to resolve this case and bring justice to the family,” said Monroe Police Chief Bryan Gilliard. “This is a tragic event for any community and we will hold those responsible accountable for their actions.”

Channel 9 noticed several shell casings and evidence markers along the streets.

Police said they've been working to get more information from witnesses in the area, but not all of them have been cooperative. The SBI is helping with the investigation.

"We're like any other community," Monroe city spokesman Pete Hovanec said. "We have 40,000 people and stuff like this, unfortunately, does happen."

"This is crazy. It's ludicrous. Nobody wants to talk. Nobody wants to tell anything," resident Joshua Ramsey said.

Police are asking the community for help and anyone with information can call 704-282-4700 and speak with an investigator.
