Second suspect charged after man shot to death inside apartment complex near UNCC

CHARLOTTE — Police have arrested a second suspect after a man was shot and killed Tuesday night outside the Aspen Height Charlotte Apartments in University City.

Officers charged 27-year-old Darian Huffman Friday with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged 26-year-old Joshua McClain Thursday with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The shooting happened just before 9 p.m. at the apartment complex on Wit Way, which is off of East W.T. Harris Boulevard and near the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.

UNC Charlotte senior Bailey Lewis was at her Aspen Heights apartment when she said an injured man came running to her neighbor’s apartment for help.

“Two of the girls came out and asked if my roommate could help them. They said they were trying to hold him to not bleed out," said Lewis.

When police got to the scene, they said they found 43-year-old Lamar McNeil inside an apartment. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“We were flipping out because we didn’t know if he was a student, if we were in danger, if the guy is still around," said Lewis.

McClain was taken into custody and arrested Thursday and Huffman was arrested Friday.

Students said management at the gated community sent them an email late Wednesday afternoon. The email said management does “not have confirmation on the location of the incident” or the “circumstances that led up to the shooting.”

Management told Channel 9 in a statement that the complex plans to enhance its officer patrol hours in response to the shooting.

Channel 9′s Tina Terry spoke to the victim’s wife, who said she is devastated and has no idea what led up to this shooting.
