CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Investigators said Michael Jefferies Jr., 24, was shot and killed at an apartment complex on Parkland Circle in the Hickory Grove Division Thursday morning. Two other people were injured.

Family of the victim told Channel 9 the shooting stemmed from a domestic disturbance between the victim’s mother and her boyfriend. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has not confirmed that information.

investigators spent hours at the scene collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.

A local community activist was also at the apartment complex talking with residents.

“When it’s at your doorstep what are you going to do about it?” questioned Jeanne LeGall, who works for Mothers of Murdered Offspring.

MOMO is a local anti-violence and support group for the families of homicide victims.

LeGall took time to inform residents of what happened and then talk with them about gun violence and the need for everyone in the community to step up and speak out.

“We have balloons, we have flowers and we have candles,” said LeGall. “But we don’t have solutions. We need solutions.”

"I’m glad she’s here but saddened by the crime,” said Latonya Lewis, who recently moved to the apartment complex. “I was coming for safety and peace. I know it can happen everywhere.”

It can and has in recent days.

Two days ago, in a span of less than eight hours there were six people hurt in four shootings across Charlotte.

"I wish that people would just realize that there is more to life than violence," said Lewis. "There is more to life than violence. We should all try to love and be peaceful because losing a life like that doesn't do anything but create more controversy and create more hate amongst each other. Let's try love."

Investigators have not yet said if any charges will be filed in the homicide.

The condition of the other two people injured in the shooting also remains unclear.
