‘Freaked me out’: 1 hurt when bullets hit cars, fire truck in southwest Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — One person was taken to the hospital after police said someone opened fire Monday morning in southwest Charlotte, hitting a fire truck and two other vehicles.

The shots rang out around 9:20 a.m. close to a 7-Eleven near the intersection of Clanton Road and Barringer Drive.

Police said bullets hit a fire truck but no CFD firefighters were injured.

A person in one of the other vehicles that were hit by gunfire, a Jeep Cherokee, had to be taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound but police said they would survive.

Officers also said nobody in the third vehicle that was hit was injured.

Police told Channel 9 they don’t think the shooting was random and said the gunman was on foot. They said the fire truck was not the intended target. No arrests have been made.

Witnesses told Channel 9 they saw a man standing on the corner at the intersection and start shooting. That’s when they ran for cover.

“At one point, when we went in, we hear gunshots outside,” said Diego Cardona.

“By coincidence, I had been coming up here to do a favor for someone and bam, that could’ve been me,” said another witness, Tim Parker. “I was loading the drinks up at the Citgo station across the street from the corner. He comes from out of nowhere. Freaked me out. Crazy, man.”

At that moment, Cardona said the fire truck drove by.

“We see a fire truck passing right by us and it stops right at the light and beyond it, we can see the guy shooting across the street and toward the fire truck,” he said.

Police believe the shooting may be related to some earlier argument.

“Stray bullets don’t have any names on it and you hear about this every day,” Parker said.

When our crews got to the scene, the fire truck had already left but the Jeep Cherokee could be seen with bullet holes and a flat tire.

Detectives are actively investigating and no other information has been released.
