Mecklenburg County deputy hurt in Uptown crash, sheriff says

CHARLOTTE — A deputy with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has been hurt following a crash in Uptown Charlotte Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 7 a.m. on North Church Street near West 12th Street.

According to the sheriff’s office, Deputy L. Blackwelder struck a vehicle after it ran a red light.

Blackwelder was then taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center for treatment.

“We are thankful that Deputy Blackwelder is now safely home, resting and recovering,” said Sheriff McFadden. “I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude to Medic for their prompt response. We look forward to Deputy Blackwelder’s return to serving our community once he has fully recovered.”
