Crews try to contain house fire in southern Burke fire

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Crews responded to a fatal house fire Thursday afternoon in southern Burke County, officials said.

Officials said they saw flames coming from the basement garage door when they got there. One of the occupants told firefighters someone was still inside.

A search and rescue effort was immediately underway for anyone inside at the home at 5580 Wilkes Grove Church Road.

Some of the upper floor collapsed forcing crews to attack the fire defensively.

After the fire was under control, crews found a female victim in a bedroom on the lower floor. She died at the scene.

Someone else that was home was taken to Frye Regional Hospital to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation.
