1 killed, 2 hurt in southeast Charlotte rental home shooting

CHARLOTTE — One person is dead and two people are hurt after a shooting at a rental home in southeast Charlotte.

It happened just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday on Hollow Drive, just off Monroe Road.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the location was rented out for an event. CMPD said it found three people with apparent gunshot wounds.

One of the victims died at the hospital, according to police.

On Monday, CMPD identified the victim as 19-year-old Chauncory Farmer.

Channel 9 spoke with a neighbor about the incident who said she heard gunshots.

“Got back in the bed to drift to sleep, and I heard it was like a still quiet. then six or seven shots, maybe eight, but they were close,” the neighbor explained. “I don’t know what caliber it was, but it was loud.”

Another neighbor, Clinton Woods, said he has lived in the neighborhood for 23 years and there is usually no crime in the area.

“I’ve never seen police tape over here. Of course, people have called the cops for different reasons, but I’ve never seen an active crime scene,” Woods elaborated.

He went on to say that incidents like this one might make other neighbors not want short-term rental homes in the community.

“We have to do something about it, and I don’t know what it is. We have to have a no-tolerance policy and a hard crackdown,” Woods said. “I would not like to wake up again at one o’clock in the morning hearing six, seven, or eight gunshots.”

CMPD said the investigation into this shooting is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Charlotte Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Editor’s note: CMPD originally identified the home as a rental on Airbnb, but Airbnb told Channel 9 it wasn’t one of their rental properties.
