Deadly double shooting spawned from family dispute, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two people died and four were injured in two separate shootings Thursday night in Charlotte, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

Police identified the two men who died as Raheem Shawdo Hammond and Gary Stevenson Jr., while the two injured are identified as Jacques Stevenson and Tammy Hammond.

Police are investigating a fight between family members and friends that may have led to the shooting.

Four people were shot at about 7:15 p.m. on Spring Garden Lane, near West Sugar Creek Road in northeast Charlotte, officials said. Initially, officers said the shooting happened outside a home on nearby Pondella Drive.

Hammond died at the Spring Garden Lane scene while three others were rushed to the hospital.

Stevenson died at the hospital, while one person suffered critical injuries and the other had non-life threatening injuries, CMPD said.

Officers told Channel 9 that those involved in the shooting knew each other and they were not looking for additional suspects.

One of the survivors drove to the Shell gas station at West Sugar Creek Road and Interstate 85. He was then taken to the hospital.

Another shooting reported in a 10-minute span happened on Michelle Linnea Drive in the University area of Charlotte, police said.

Two people were shot at that scene. One suffered life-threatening injuries while the other has non-life threatening injuries.

Police do not believe that shooting was connected to the Spring Garden Lane deadly shooting.
