YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A 19-year-old man riding a motorcycle died in a two-vehicle wreck early Monday evening in York County, troopers said.
The 2014 Yamaha collided with a Honda sedan at about 7:40 p.m. at the intersection of S.C. Highway 160 and Brayden Parkway. At this time, it is not clear, if the motorcycle stopped at the the two way stop.
The intersection were the crash occurred does not meet the requirements for a traffic signal, but neighbors believe the crash could have been prevented with proper safety measures and have requested a traffic signal for years.
Authorities identified Damon Justus as the victim who died at the scene.
Dillon Pennington, a friend of Damon’s, said he had a passion for cars and vehicles since he was a child.
“He grew up riding dirt bikes, motorcycles all that, since he was real little,” Pennington said.
Neighbors like Sheri Severance is just one of many who want to see a change at the intersection.
“It is really probably one of the most dangerous intersections I think on 160 at this time,” Severance said.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation says it has received questions about installing a traffic signal at that intersection since 2013 and has studied the area in March of 2022. However, engineers say the intersection does not need a traffic signal and only gets about 40-50 percent of the traffic that would be needed to add one.
To remember his friend, Pennington set up a Gofundme to raise money for Justus’ family.
