MONROE, N.C. — A 77-year-old woman was killed in a single-car crash Sunday afternoon in Union County, troopers told Channel 9.
Troopers said Shirley Barnes drove off the road in her smart car, struck a mailbox and crashed into a stone wall, pushing her car back onto the roadway, where it overturned several times.

Barnes was pronounced dead after she was ejected from the car in the crash, which occurred in the 7000 block of Potter Road in Weddington.
Deputies said the road was closed while crews investigated and cleared the scene.
