Man dead, wife hurt after tree falls on Charlotte home

CHARLOTTE — A man inside a northwest Charlotte home died after a tree fell on it Friday morning. It happened as Helene swept through, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.

The man’s wife was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It happened just after 5 a.m. on the 4200 block of Brookway Drive. Channel 9′s Hunter Sáenz learned the man who died was Anthony “Tony” Taylor. He was in his 60s and a father of four.

Taylor’s kids, both of whom are adults, said they were able to get out safely.

The tree fell on Taylor and his wife as they were sleeping in their bed. Taylor’s wide has been discharged and is doing OK under the circumstances, her children said.

“This is just a tragedy,” said Leslie Adams, who lives in the Brookfield neighborhood where it happened. “It’s just amazing that only one person lost their life.”

Charlotte Fire said it was unsafe for people to be inside the home.

The incident comes as Tropical Storm Helene is moving through our area.

This is the fourth storm-related death due to Helene.
