HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — A man was arrested in Virginia following a deadly shooting at the Walgreens on Hylas Lane in Huntersville Tuesday night.

Shortly before 7 p.m., the Huntersville Police Department responded to reports about an unresponsive woman inside a vehicle. The woman, later identified as 55-year-old Sureita Angelia Samuels, was then pronounced deceased.

Witnesses told police they heard gunshots and saw a man exit the victim’s vehicle shortly after. The man, later identified as 53-year-old Rahman Akbar Ferguson, then entered a black Dodge Ram truck and left the area, according to police.

“It’s alarming,” said Jackie Coffee, a Huntersville resident. “It’s alarming, living literally down the street. It’s too close. It’s too close. It’s been a quiet area for as long as I’ve been here.”

The Huntersville Police Department said once they realized Ferguson was heading north, they reached out to Virginia State Police for assistance.

The Alexandria Police Department later informed the Huntersville Police Department they had attempted to stop Ferguson’s truck, but he fled from them twice, crashed, and ran from the truck. He was taken into custody after a brief search.

Police said they are working to extradite Ferguson to North Carolina.

Walgreens released a statement regarding the incident, saying:

“The safety of our patients, customers, and team members is our highest priority. We are cooperating with law enforcement, and further questions should be directed to them.”
