Victim identified, man charged in deadly northeast Charlotte shooting

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have identified the victim and charged a man in a deadly shooting in northeast Charlotte.

Officials said they responded to North Tryon Street, near Craighead Road, for an assault with a deadly weapon call around 11:23 p.m. Saturday. Police arrived to find Malik Fidel Whitney, 50, had been shot.

Whitney was transported to Atrium Main, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said they arrested the man responsible for the shooting, Darrell McKinley, 53. He was previously charged with voluntary manslaughter, but new evidence led officers to upgrade the charge to murder, according to CMPD.

The investigation into the case is active and ongoing.
