CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have released a vehicle description as they continue to search for the driver who struck and killed a man in a wheelchair over the weekend.

Investigators said 46-year-old Dandy Duncan was fatally struck by a car early Saturday morning while trying to cross West Sugar Creek Road.

Duncan was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at about 2:30 a.m.

Police said Duncan appeared to be crossing West Sugar Creek Road eastbound at the driveway of Americare Pediatrics just after midnight when he was struck.

He was not crossing in a crosswalk and his wheelchair didn't have any reflectors. Police also said Duncan was wearing dark clothing.

Investigators are still searching for the driver of the car, which they believe is a 2006-2013 silver Chevrolet Impala with tinted windows, displaying a 30-day tag or out-of-state paper tag with damage to its headlights and left front.

Carrie Ellis, Duncan's sister, said the family has been devastated by her brother’s death.

"We don't know who did it so we just want someone to come clean to let us know so we can breathe,” Ellis said.

"He was a fun person. He loved everybody,” said Demario Ellis, Duncan’s brother-in-law.

In addition to the driver, the family and the church blame the road, and they feel there are a ton of accidents between North Tryon and I-85 because people drive too fast.

"I would like them to change the speed limit,” said Kathy Bridges, a friend and a trustee of the Mayfield Memorial Baptist where Duncan also was a member. “I would like them to have more lighting on Sugar Creek, stop lights and caution lights."

Police are asking if anyone witnessed the crash or has information to call Detective N.S. Bush at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
