Crash involving CATS bus in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — One person is dead and four others are hurt after a crash involving a Charlotte Area Transit System bus Wednesday morning, police said.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said it happened in the 5600 block of Central Avenue in east Charlotte just before 8:30 a.m.

The driver of a 2007 Honda Civic, Ofren Parra Guzman, 19, was speeding with two passengers in the car when he rear-ended the stopped bus near Reddman Road, according to the preliminary investigation.

Guzman and a 21-year-old passenger were taken to hospitals. Guzman had life-threatening injuries and the 21-year-old passenger had minor injuries, police said.

Edgar Sanchez, 50, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Two bus passengers were treated for minor injuries.
