1 dead, 4 others hurt in Lancaster County drive-by shooting

Deputies say children were present at the time of the shooting but none were injured

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — One person was killed and four others were injured when gunfire erupted Sunday night during an apparent drive-by shooting in Lancaster County.

Just after 10 p.m., authorities received several 911 calls about gunshots being fired on Memorial Drive, on the west side of Lancaster.

When officers got to the scene, they found two gunshot victims. They were rushed to the hospital. Police said two other victims had already been taken to the hospital in private vehicles.

After a fifth victim drove herself to a relative’s home, EMS was called and she was also taken to the hospital, according to police.

Officials said one of the men who were shot died at the hospital. He was identified as 27-year-old Shonquil Medley.

Police said the other victims are expected to survive.

According to authorities, one victim is 19 and the others are in their 20s. Four of the people who were shot were men and one was a woman.

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was sent to help the Sheriff’s Office with the investigation. Detectives said it appeared a group of people had gathered at the home, with several people in the house and outside as well, including children.

Everyone who was hit by the gunfire was outside the house, officials said. One victim was in a car with children inside.

No children were hurt, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators think the bullets were fired from a vehicle on Mahaffey Line Drive. No arrests have been made in the case.

“We have received very little useful information from those present when the shooting occurred,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “Although we have developed some leads on our own and are pursuing them, we need those present and anyone else with information to come forward and share it with us. This was a brazen, violent incident with multiple shots fired, multiple people injured, and one killed. The person or persons responsible need to be identified, located, and jailed as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information about this case should call the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office at 803-283-3388.
