MATTHEWS, N.C. — One person died and three others were seriously hurt in a wreck involving seven vehicles Thursday afternoon in Matthews, officials said.
The wreck happened shortly after 2 p.m. on U.S. Highway 74 at Interstate 485.

The inbound lanes were shut down following the crash. The outbound lanes were backed up all the way to uptown Charlotte.
Authorities encouraged motorists to take an alternate route to avoid the highway.
The three victims who were injured were taken to Novant Health Presbyterian and Atrium Health CMC.
The road reopened at about 5 p.m.
No further information has been released.
