Man dead, 2 kids hurt after fiery crash in south Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Celeo Avalid Chirino, 20, was killed and two juveniles were hurt after a fiery crash in south Charlotte Sunday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

The crash happened at Edgewater Drive and South Boulevard around 1 a.m.

Chirino was driving a Toyota Scion south on South Boulevard when he hit a raised median causing major damage to the undercarriage.

The car was soon engulfed in flames, police said. Chirino died at the scene and the other two made it out of the Toyota with injuries. They were taken to Atrium Health Main.

Alcohol and speeding played a role in the wreck, according to the preliminary investigation.

All three were wearing seat belts.

The investigation is ongoing.
