1 dead, 1 injured after shooting in northeast Charlotte; police investigating

CHARLOTTE — Investigators with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department say a 22-year-old man died and another person was injured after a shooting early Saturday morning near the University City area.

According to a news release sent by CMPD Monday morning, the shooting happened just before 3 a.m. on University City Boulevard near John Kirk Drive. Two people were shot and taken to the hospital, but one of the victims later died from his injuries.

The victim who died was identified by CMPD as Tashon Malyk Mock. The injured victim wasn’t identified.

Channel 9 spoke with Mock’s mother, who said her son was a bystander during a drive-by shooting near a convenience store.

Monique Dulin, Mock’s mother, told Channel 9 she spoke with witnesses who described the scene. The witnesses told Dulin that a woman was assaulted by a man at the convenience store before the drive-by shooting occurred while Mock was nearby.

“Just to know that someone had no value for anyone’s life that they would just drive up to a gas station and just randomly start shooting, I’m having a really hard time with that,” Dulin said. “He loved his family, like loved, loved his family. I guess I just haven’t really grasped the fact that I won’t actually see his face again.”

CMPD said police are still investigating the shooting, but no suspects were identified Monday. If you have information about the shooting, you’re asked to call 704-432-TIPS to speak with a detective.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
