'We're just ready to move on': UNCC students file complaints on unfinished apartment complex

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A little more than a month remaining in the semester, and many UNC Charlotte students still can’t get into their apartments.

Students told Channel 9 nonstop stories about excuses the management of Haven 49 why the apartment complex still isn’t ready to move in.

“It was kind of like a different excuse every time,” UNCC student Andrew Gallimore said. “If I knew in August that we would still be here talking about this mess in November, I would’ve left sooner, obviously. It’s unbelievable.”

Gallimore is one of those hundreds of students who signed a lease agreement with Haven 49 apartments the near UNCC campus.

The apartment complex still isn’t ready.

On Haven 49’s website, the company apologized for “construction delays.”

“Every two weeks, we get an email,” Gallimore said. “’Two more weeks, and then two more weeks.’”

Students have taken their concerns, and now a complaint, to the state Department of Justice.

The office confirmed it has received at least seven complaints from students and parents.

Gallimore said students haven’t even received refunds.

Gallimore said that he and his brother have since moved on to another apartment complex, and that Haven 49 owes them more than $5,000 for rent they paid in advance.

“We're just kind of ready to move on,” Gallimore said.
