NORTH CAROLINA — The battle over transgender rights in North Carolina continues.
A new lawsuit argues the health plan for state employees violates federal health and education laws by refusing to pay for hormone treatments and surgeries that it once covered.
"This kind of treatment and discrimination is unlawful. The idea that because it only effects a certain number of people that wouldn't be a rationale for excluding that, that wouldn't stand. It wouldn't stand in court and it wouldn't stand morally for the North Carolina State Health Plan," Taylor Brown from Lambda Legal said.
The new lawsuit comes amid unresolved litigation over the state's "Bathroom Bill" and the law that replaced it.
It forced people to use bathrooms based on their gender.
Charlotte ended up losing the NBA All-Star Game in 2017 over House Bill 2.
