According to the DHEC website, most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms. The risk of serious illness is low. You can learn more about the symptoms and treatment here.
DHEC has recommended spraying for mosquitoes within a 1-mile radius of Hampton, East Moore and Whitner streets.
"It's a little scary that it's in the area, but if they spray, that should take care of it," said resident Nancy Abbott.
A contractor will begin spraying at 2 a.m. Saturday, and it could take about four to five hours to complete the job.
Officials said the spray is not harmful to people or pets, but it’s not recommended to be in its direct path. They said beekeepers within the 1-mile radius should cover hives Friday night.
Officials recommend that residents dump standing water from around their homes, such as water in flowerpots, rain gutters and pet bowls.
"If you should be exposed to mosquitoes and develop an illness with fever, we encourage you to consult your health care provider," said South Carolina State Epidemiologist Linda Bell.
No other details about where the person got the virus have been released.
