The Birkdale Golf Club has been around more than 20 years off Birkdale Commons Parkway at NC 73.
With new investments, the club plans to add a hotel, apartments and retail around the course. The $65 million project will also mean some major changes are on the way for roads connecting to NC 73.
The good news? The development will mean a new road to help alleviate that projected additional traffic.

“We went through a very in-depth exhausting, analysis to make sure our project whatever traffic we had to mitigate, we could handle it,” said Trent Gustafson, president of Gustafson Partners Commercial Real Estate.
Gustafson said the project will have a huge impact on the local community.
Residents like Ian Starowicz agree.
"I live in the neighborhood, so I can't imagine it will effect not only the traffic here, but I also think it will effect property values," he said.
The construction of the new road is slated to begin at the end of 2019 or beginning of 2020. The developer hopes to complete the new road before the North Carolina Department of Transportation does the widening project.
