Local mother hosts walk to bring awareness to rare genetic disease

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A group from Rock Hill is walking to bring awareness and hopefully find a cure for a rare genetic disease.

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a genetic disease that only impacts 50,000 people in the U.S. and one million worldwide. According to the Mayo Clinic, TSC is a rare genetic disease that causes noncancerous tumors to form in different parts of the body and is normally diagnosed in infancy or childhood.

Kristen Moore, Vice Chair for the TSC Alliance of North Carolina, has a 3-and-a-half-year-old son, Jackson, who was diagnosed at just 7 weeks old after he began having seizures. Moore’s son went into brain surgery at 17 months old, he was later diagnosed with autism and is non-verbal.

On Saturday, Moore and other families in Rock Hill gathered at Cherry Park to raise funds and awareness that will one day lead to a cure for TSC.
