Landfill moving closer to homes in Ballantyne

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Residents in Ballantyne are not happy about Mecklenburg County's plan to expand a nearby landfill.

"I don't want my children around a place, which is like, if I could call it a junkyard, for lack of a better term," Anurag Goel said.

The landfill has been open for 11 years and takes only construction and demolition debris. It does not take household trash. The space is almost full, so county commissioners decided Wednesday night to add 18 acres to the current 45-acre space.

"The house values are going to go down. We did not know about this when we bought the house here," Goel said.

While some residents are upset with the expansion, the decision is actually a small victory for these neighbors. The county originally planned to start dumping household trash there and make an even bigger expansion.

Instead, county commissioners agreed to keep sending the garbage to a private landfill near the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
