KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — The Kannapolis Intimidators Class A baseball franchise has launched a campaign to rename the team, and the community is invited to submit name suggestions.

Now through Feb. 13, fans can go to kannapolisballpark.com to submit their nominations for the team's new name, along with an explanation of how and why it embodies Kannapolis professional baseball, as part of the "Branded New By You" campaign.

In addition to a new name, the rebrand will include a new logo and mascot.

The new identity will debut after the 2019 season ends.

The Intimidators' name honored NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr., who purchased the team after the 2000 season, just months before his untimely death during the Daytona 500 in February 2001.

Earnhardt’s Sr. son, Dale Earnhardt Jr, tweeted about the change.

“I remember how proud dad was of this,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “What a shame it has to end.”

The team was first known as the Phillies then the Boll Weevils before becoming the Intimidators.

The team will also be moving into a new ballpark in downtown Kannapolis. The new Kannapolis Sports and Entertainment Venue is scheduled to open in April of 2020.

Team owner Andy Sandler said in a press release, “We are excited to partner with the Kannapolis community in revitalizing the downtown anchored by the new Sports and Entertainment Venue.

"Giving fans an even better game experience with a new team name, fresh logo and engaging mascot is a very important part of what is ahead for Kannapolis baseball and the city."

Suggested names and feedback will be considered by the team as they work with brand identity firm- Studio Simon- to select a new name.
