I-85 Near Gaffney Reopened After Sunday's Deadly Accident

COLUMBIA, S.C.,None — Interstate 85 in Cherokee County was reopened Tuesday morning after being closed two days because a tractor-trailer crash damaged a support column.

The state Transportation Department closed the South Carolina 150 bridge over Interstate 85 Sunday afternoon.

Investigators said the driver of the tractor-trailer was ejected from his truck when it the bridge abutment and burst into flames Sunday morning. The second victim was found in the sleeper section of the truck after the fire was put out.

Cpl. Bryan McDougald said on Sunday evening that motorists must leave I-85 at Exit 92 near Gaffney and detour on state highways for about 6 miles before they can re-enter the interstate.

State bridge engineers inspecting the damage and expedited the repair work.

The names of the victims have not been released.
