ASHEBORO, N.C.,None — A gorilla came close to escaping from the North Carolina Zoo on Sunday.
Video taken by Erica Bullins, who was visiting the zoo, and obtained by WGHP, shows the gorilla using a branch to climb up a glass enclosure. The animal then put its hand over the top of the glass wall.
Bullins said she called 911 and also alerted zoo employees of the situation.
Zoo spokesman Rod Hackney said the branch the gorilla used to climb the wall didn't belong in the enclosure and had likely fallen into it Sunday afternoon.
The gorilla exhibit was closed Sunday in order to clear the branch and it remained closed Monday. Zoo officials said workers are checking the enclosure for safety and are also checking overhanging trees for loose limbs.
