A newspaper carrier first saw the fire and called 911. Firefighters said the situation would have gotten much worse if not for that person's call. They said flames were shooting through the roof of the clubhouse when they arrived.

No residential units were affected by the flames, so no one was evacuated from the building.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control just before 5 a.m., but they continued to work to put out hot spots for another hour. Crews said getting those hot spots under control was their first priority.

Once the hot spots were extinguished, fire investigators began looking for the cause of the flames. They said they think the fire started in the attic or roof area.

Officials shut down Rock Hill Church Road early Friday morning, but reopened it just before 6 a.m.
